PET SURRENDER
Honesty helps your pet
This is a judgement-free zone. We know that life is not always certain and things can happen out of your control. Sometimes it's as simple as a situation with a pet becoming unmanageable.
Claiming your pet is "a stray that you found" rather than admitting you can no longer keep it is never the answer. Keeping our doors open depends on our community being truthful. If we receive your pet as a stray, it will be kept for 3 open-hours business days waiting for someone to claim it, before being prepared for adoption. This wait time will cause your pet to experience unnecessary additional stress during this time, instead of us being able to immediately make them available to a possible new home.
Disclosing the truth about your surrender also allows us to get as much relevant information about your pet as possible to ensure we are able to find the right fit in their future home and so their future adopters are able to correctly care for them.
We understand and are here to help
We understand that parting ways with an animal can be especially difficult and we're committed to working with you to ensure the best possible solution for you and your pet. We will treat them like family until they find their next home.
You Have Options!
First let's discuss why you're needing to re-home your pet:
-
Behavior Issues
-
Financial Issues
-
Disaster or medical situations
-
Moving
Our staff is here to discuss with you ways we might be able to help or suggesting others who may. If your situation may just be temporary, let's see if we can find a solution!
Things like behavior problems arise in all animals of all ages, we would be happy to discuss or find resources you can use to correct these issues. Financial issues are hard and we understand but if it's something like needing food for your pet while you get back on your feet, check out our Food Pantry.

Jefferson County Humane Society Animal Intake
JCHS is privately funded through donations, fundraisers, and adoptions. We are not funded by the county or any of the towns in Jefferson County.
On average it costs us $300 to $500 to take care of an animal and find it a new home. That does not include extra veterinary expense for illnesses, injuries, heartworm treatment, etc. It does include spays, neuters, vaccines, worming, heartworm testing and microchipping. We have paid staff and volunteers that take care of the animals on a daily basis.
Our priority is to take in animals in Jefferson County.
We ask that you consider a donation when bringing in an animal.
Please remember we are not a veterinary clinic so if you have an injured animal, please seek veterinary care.
It is always best to email us at jfcountypets@gmail.com or message us on Facebook before bringing an animal in to make sure we can take the animal. If you live outside of Jefferson County you must contact us before bringing an animal to our shelter.
Please Note: Jefferson County Humane Society requires a dog behavior assessment prior being approved for surrendering with our shelter.
Any dog with aggressive behavior towards people, kids, or other animals will not be able to be surrendered with us for the safety of our staff, animals, volunteers, and visitors.
If you have an aggressive dog we can send you a list with other animals rescues/shelters at your request via email.
However, we can not be held responsible for any reason due to their policies and practices.
Follow-Ups
It's very common for owners who must surrender their pets to request follow-ups - be it by phone calls, emails, etc. Understand that our staff is often very busy but will do our best to accommodate your needs as we understand that this process is often full of grief. Your pet will be listed on the adoptable animals page of our website until it is adopted. Once you see that it has left, you are more than welcome to contact us to learn the outcome. You can also follow us on Facebook to see their adoption photo!
